Bird of Paradise

Bird of paradise plant (Strelitzia) is an evergreen perennial native to South Africa that has exotic flowers and banana-shaped leaves. It is grown outdoors in warm climates and as a houseplant elsewhere. It can adapt to a wide spectrum of light conditions from direct sun to low, indirect light. It is related to the banana plant and has three species: reginae, juncea, and nicolai. It may take 4 to 5 years for the plant to flower, which usually happens between April and November. It is poisonous to cats and dogs if eaten. It is also known as a crane flower and is the official flower of Los Angeles and Madeira.
